Transformers is a popular and iconic franchise that spans multiple titles and mediums. The franchise follows alien skyscraper-sized robots in their war for the Allspark. The movies spanned multiple storylines, introduced numerous Transformers characters and caused tons of destruction. The movies were fun, ridiculous and went on to make billions of dollars, which is why they got so many sequels.

The director of these initial movies went on to admit that the test screening of the first movie gave him an epiphany about the movie he produced. During the promotion of his new film titled Ambulance, Bay went on to reflect on his time working for the very popular Transformers franchise. “When directors go pre-screen their movies, we’re testing them, you see what [audiences] feel and whatnot, and… you want to throw up,” the director stated to Screen Rant. “I’m now watching it with a whole bunch of families and kids, and I’m like, ‘Okay, dumb robot movie. Oh my God. It’s just a kids’ movie. Oh, man. Oh, what did I do?’ It gets a huge score, and it was unfinished.”
Transformers got a different response from a more adult audience. “This is more of the adult kind of room, and I look to the guy and I [ask], ‘Do you like this movie?’ And he goes, ‘[meh hand motion].’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, this is terrible. I just made a terrible movie.’ Whatever. Huge matching score, like a 94. That’s a spectacular movie score,” Bay said. Usually, during test screenings, a movie is shown to a small audience and they end up giving their review to be submitted for the creators to look back on to reflect on. After reading the questionnaire, the creators go back and adjust things, or they may end up leaving it the same.
Hearing a director call their film a “kids movie” is a little funny, as that’s often associated with being a bad thing in many spaces. Many people find it hard to turn a script or the idea for a film into the actual final product that they envisioned. A lot of things go wrong along the way, and sometimes the visuals don’t end up looking the way they anticipated. Either way, many people enjoyed the Transformers films regardless of what critics said, and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon.
Right now, fans are gearing up for a new Transformers movie to hit the theaters, as it will start off a brand new trilogy for the iconic franchise of robots. This new film is highly anticipated by fans and viewers alike, so many have high hopes because the recent Bumblebee movie was enjoyed by many. Bay may have breathed new life into this franchise, but it looks to get a second awakening next summer.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is slated for a June 9, 2023, release.
