According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Rainbow Six movie will be directed by Chad Stahelski, the man behind the camera in every John Wick movie, the franchise that gave him his directorial debut. In Rainbow Six, Jordan will play the novel’s protagonist John Clark, who is actually the same John Kelly from Without Remorse, where his character adopts the Clark surname as a new identity, meaning the film will be a direct sequel for what Paramount hopes to turn into a profitable franchise led by the actor.
John Clark is one of Clancy’s iconic characters in the Jack Ryan universe, and in the past he’s been played by the likes of Willem Dafoe and Lieb Schreiber in movies like Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears, respectively, both based on the author’s books. Jordan and Stahelski will be given producing roles alongside Elizabeth Raposo, Akiva Goldsman, Greg Lessans, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec.
One key difference that already sets Rainbow Six apart from Without Remorse is that -as of now- Paramount plans to release the movie in theaters, something that will bode well for Jordan’s aspiring hit saga. Stalhelski won’t start working on Rainbow Six until John Wick: Chapter 4 comes out, with his experience with those four movies certainly making this Clancy film more appealing.
Rainbow Six’s gaming legacy is beyond debate with the name becoming synonymous with shooters since the late 90s, however, its latest entry Extraction failed to match the popularity of its predecessor Rainbow Six Siege in every possible metric. Whether Michael B. Jordan and Chad Stahelski are enough to do the same for movies remains to be seen.
