The Mets announced it was a proactive decision after a rain delay halted Sunday’s 4-2 MLB loss to the Phillies for an hour and indicated DeGrom was removed because of his pitch count, not an injury.
DeGrom – an All-Star in 2015 – needed 45 pitches to get out of the first inning.
The 29-year-old, who had been on the DL since May 2 as a result of elbow discomfort, said he was surprised by the decision.
“I was kinda surprised honestly. I definitely would’ve liked to go back out there. The reasoning I understand, but who wants to pitch one inning as a starter,” he told reporters.
Off to a strong start this season, deGrom is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA and 56 strikeouts.
