Tuesday afternoon Swedish retailer Inet posted a listing for a retail copy of a currently unannounced and unofficial Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Nintendo Switch. The listing provides a short description confirming the package will include Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. “Three masterpieces now Shocked and Switched,” reads a translated message. The listing implies it’s an updated version of the Metroid Prime Trilogy released for the Wii.
However, in addition to the short description, there’s a confusing message presumably added by the storefront employee that posted the message. “This product is only a rumor, but we think it will be announced at The Game Awards and will launch in early 2019 (Feb?).” Despite the fine print message, Inet is already allowing pre-orders for the product.
Beyond Inet’s supposed rumor and its eerily specific release window and likely announcement event, there’s plenty of supporting evidence worth considering. For one, Nintendo is already confirmed to be revealing “something special” at The Game Awards 2018. This was confirmed by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in a conversation with Geoff Keighley on Twitter. And then there’s the more general rumors about Metroid Prime 4 being unveiled at the show.
All in all, there’s not enough here to say with any certainty that Metroid Prime 4 or Metroid Prime Trilogy will be shown at The Game Awards 2018. But everything adds up to be highly suspicious. A Metroid Prime Trilogy release in early 2019, or at least before the eventual release of Metroid Prime 4, is smart release planning. And a potential Metroid Prime 4 teaser alongside a Metroid Prime Trilogy announcement would build a lot of excitement for the trailer.
